How to Choose Footwear in India: A Practical Buying Guide
By BachatRaja Team · 29 Oct 2026
Footwear is one of the easiest things to buy wrong. A pair that looks great in a product photo can pinch by afternoon or fall apart after one monsoon. This guide covers what to check before you pay, whether you shop in a store or online.
Start with how you will actually use them
Before looking at designs or discounts, decide the main job of the pair. Daily office wear, gym sessions, running, long walks, travel and occasional festive use all put different demands on a shoe. A pair bought for "a bit of everything" often does none of them well.
Be honest about frequency too. If you will wear a pair four or five days a week, spend your effort on comfort and durability. If it is for a few occasions a year, appearance can matter more.
Get the fit right
Fit matters more than brand or style. A few general habits help:
- Try shoes in the evening if you can. Feet tend to be slightly larger by then. - Wear the kind of socks you will normally use. - Leave a little room at the toes, and check that your heel does not slip. - Do not rely on one size chart. Sizing differs between brands, and UK, US and Euro sizes are not always converted the same way. - Measure your foot length in cm and compare it with the brand's own size guide, especially when ordering online.
If one foot is larger than the other, fit the larger one.
Look at the upper material
The upper is the part that covers your foot, and the material affects breathability, upkeep and lifespan.
- Leather is common for formal and casual shoes. It usually needs polishing and care, and it can suffer in heavy rain. - Synthetic leather is often cheaper and easy to wipe clean, but can feel less breathable. - Knit or mesh fabrics are common in sports and casual sneakers and generally suit warm weather. They can be harder to clean and may wear differently from leather. - Rubber or EVA-type materials are common in monsoon footwear and flip-flops because they handle water well.
Check the product listing for the stated material. If it is vague, treat that as a reason to look closer.
Check the sole and cushioning
The sole decides grip, comfort and how long the shoe lasts. Look for a pattern that grips on wet tiles and roads, since many Indian cities have slippery surfaces during the rains. Press on the sole if you are in a store. Very thin, hard soles can feel tiring on long walks. Cushioning is a matter of personal preference, so a pair that suits a friend may not suit you.
For running or gym use, choose footwear made for that activity rather than a fashion sneaker. If you have a foot condition or pain, talk to a doctor or podiatrist before buying.
Think about Indian weather
Heat, humidity and monsoon should shape your choice. In hot, humid regions, breathable uppers and open designs can be more comfortable. During the rains, avoid suede and untreated leather where you can, and keep a quick-drying pair for wet days. Always dry shoes away from direct harsh sunlight and let them air out between wears.
Read discounts carefully
MRP on a listing is not always the price anyone actually paid, so a big percentage off does not by itself tell you the pair is good value. Judge a deal on fit, materials, and how much you will use the shoe, then use the discount as a bonus. Compare the same or similar pair across a couple of stores, and factor in delivery fees or bank offer conditions.
Check returns and exchanges
Before buying online, read the return and exchange policy for that specific item. Some products or sale items may have different terms. Keep the box and tags intact until you are sure about the fit, and try the shoes indoors on a clean surface first.
